Okay, I think I can answer this question now. I took my hardtop up to Azusa Canyon today during the big rainstorm. The rangers saw me pull up in a bone stock samurai and they started laughing (I would have too). They told me the water was REALLY high and they suggested I turn around and go home. The ranger said "the water will come over half way up the doors". I told him I would go and just take a look, and promised I wouldn't do anything stupid because I had my son with me (I lied). The first crossing was pretty deep, I started going through and could see that the water was almost half way up my doors from the start - too late to stop now! So I kept on going. Half way through the water was deeper, about half way up the door and the water was moving fast! It started to float the sammy but I kept my foot in it. I made it but there was water inside the floor of the zuk when I got to the other side. The second and third water crossings were deeper than the first. Both attempts sent water over the hood - yikes! I ended up making it all the way back in the canyon as far as you could go. All the guys in big trucks back there were laughing and giving me the thumbs up for making it. Now I had to make it back and the water was rising because it was raining even harder. Going back the motor started cutting out and running funny after being soaked so much. I did make it but it was hair raising. The zuk floated each time I crossed the deep water. Boy that was stupid D'oh! , I could have got swept away with my son. Sometimes I lose sight of better judgement with the promise of adventure. I think next time I will leave my boy home - I didn't tell mom what I did because I would get a big lecture I'm sure! Just for the record - a samurai will start floating when the water is about half way up the doors!

Doing this will have just made you even more stoopid, and you would have floated away. Laughing

I know when a sami floats.... when the tires leave the riverbed. Laughing

Thank god it was a stocker just think if you were sporting 33's you would be gone.

Just don't tell him not to tell mommy and she'll never find out about it, trust me I know this one if you tell him to keep his mouth shut he'll be telling on you before you can get the front door of your house closed. Laughing

I thought the zuks were only good to be used as anchors in the water.
Guess I was wrong! D'oh! Imagine that. D'oh!

Maybe for some folks, but I will remind you of that statement if I happen to see a sammy do a portion of the trail that you can't/won't do in the Toyota!

Oh... you mean like a big ledge or steep hill (or deep water) Laughing

I hate it when I have to go OVER rocks that Fred, Rick, Brian, Eric, Kevin, and sometimes Vince (did I leave anyone out?) go AROUND Crying or Very Sad

Ooooooh, you're really asking for it now buddy. I really don't want to re-hash that whole Doran thing but I just want to state the fact that Eric did go up it. And I remember a few occassions where we saw some footage of Kevin or Eric or some other Samurai nutball would go down a ledge that nobody else would(Moab?). I believe he did it twice while all other brands just watched.

I will end up fighting with myself on this topic because I own, and love, both vehicles. Of course I prefer the Toyota for overall stability and power. Let me just say there are virtues to both vehicles.

Hey I just thought of something. There aren't any other samurai guys from the club registered on this site. Looks like I'm out numbered again.

Kevin is registered, IBugFred, Rick, Zuke Guy, and Fred, spinnin4s, but they are all just lurking... zero posts Rolling Eyes

Eric did a great job on Doran, and I have great respect for the Sammy... I just wouldn't want to do a big ledge or very steep hill in one...

I just thought of a good Sammy water crossing technique... open the doors if they are still on, and that way it will stay somewhat sunken and won't float away Laughing

Think The only thing that might save you is when you are four wheeling a sami you probably have no air in the tires to add buoyancy. Confused Rolling Eyes Eh? Very Happy

Does a bulge in the tire matter, Would you feel better with a bulge or without a bulge in the tire.

just a joke about the light weight of the Sami. Even at single digit air pressure, it is hard to get the tires to bulge like they will on a bigger, heavier rig... the right amount of buldge, the right amount of air down... depending upon the tire and the rig.

A couple of years ago I met this guy with a sami that said he ran zero air and also removed his valve stems at times.

My original message said "Does a bulge matter, Would you feel better with a bulge or without a bulge." Gay and stated like that it did not sound right so I changed it before submitting.

Since my Willys weighs in at a little more than a Sami, I can understand this lack of a bulge, aired down to about 12psi. the Willys barely has any tire bulge but it has a major feel difference. That's only becuase with full air pressure it rides a little stiff. The lack of air becomes my suspension. Laughing

Pretty sad when you quote yourself, and I call BS BS BS you need to have some air or you won't hold a bead, and the rim could spin leaving the tire in place.

It'll be a long time before you have to worry about that. I haven't seen any Sammies on El Hill yet, except the ones that went the long way around to get to the top so they could look down at all the action at the bottom.

I heard one group of off roaders take a Sammie along with them when they go to Calico just so they can drive it into the hole on the Doran. It makes a great bridge for everyone to drive over. Dancing

Dancing

Heck, it's been a long time since we've had to worry about you on the trail at all! Laughing Laughing

Isn't it funny how any category, any topic on this board eventually turns into a chit chat session. Hey, don't we have an area for that? Think

Eric gave El Hill a great try last spring when I did it (Same line as Jeff did, left side)... I think his Sami was 'stretched' then, so does it count?

He made it up the lower 1/3 and was just about home free when he stalled (carburated)... If he had lower gears, he would have been able to keep the RPM's up and would have made it Applause

He winched about 10 feet and then it would start, and he drove the rest.

In my eyes a Sammie is a Sammie stretched or not. It's the effort that counts with me no matter what you brung to the run.

Applause Applause ERIC Applause Applause . Applause Applause MARK Applause Applause

Bottom line is we all pick something to start with and who knows what we'll be driving when we finally have to stop. I just hope we all stay just far enough under the line that we won't get hurt.

Remember, I got out of the truck when Jeff went up El Hill Embarassed .

Laughing Either way your post pad is illegal, the one and only reason our count is so high (and who cares anyway) is while you were waiting on the outside looking in we were building your internet playground. You could have easily joined us and had input..... but noooooooo, you preferred to sit there and watch. But go ahead and pad we don't mind.

Vince, we have had a stock sami at TDS a few years ago he did ok had to put a little more peddle down at times but he did fine. If I was ever to go back to a sami it would have been a tintop, I always like them better they have more weight in the rear which is one of the big drawbacks on steep angles the softies have almost no rear weight at all....... forget about it I don't want it.

Applause "no injuries" as he went over and over and over. Ouch! Beer Cheers

Even though I wasn't there the video plainly shows a starter flying out the window, not a carburator. You need to get your flying auto parts straight. Laughing
