We have decided to work on our new secret trails instead of going to the Tin Bender Jambo.

The Jambo will not be too far away if anyone wants to register and go to the raffle or hang with the Tin Benders! All proceeds go to Friends of Panamint Valley, so it is a good cause, plus the raffle is like TDS, one ticket per registration, so odds are better than at the Cal 4 Wheel events!

Click here for info and registration to the Tin Bender Jamboree!

Camp at Soggy Dry Lake: Bessimer Mine Road off of Hwy 247 (mile marker 31.5)

Come out and help us break the Fry Canyon Trail or explore the many moderate routes in the area.

For info on the trails including pictures and maps, see one of the discussions in this forum (Members (and Friends of the Club) Chit Chat) about "Fry Mountains"

This area is a club secret for now until we establish the trails...

Looking forward to it, I've got some firewood that I can bring along if this is going to be an overnighter.

My buddy Roger will be riding shotgun with me. I'm planning on bringing the motorhome out and staying for the weekend. When is everybody leaving to go out there? Is this the same place we parked last time?

It will be great to see Roger again...

The area where we parked would be OK, it would have some wind shelter since it is near those hills (I hope). We could also go farther out onto the dry lake and out to the right if it is too crowded there.

In talking to Fred it sounds like everyone is still up in the air about coming Friday night or Saturday morning.

I think most if not all are planning on making a weekend of it. I will be spending at least Saturday night.

Plans should firm up next week.

I am going to come up with some good directions and maybe a map to help everyone find it.

Directions to Soggy Dry Lake, Johnson Valley OHV area

From Victorville, exit the I-15 at Bear Valley Road, head East. Pass out of Victorville and enter Apple Valley. Continuing East, intersect Hwy 18 and head toward Lucerne Valley. In Lucerne Valley (the last gas if coming from this direction) stay on the same road, which becomes Hwy 247 as Hwy 18 turns South toward Big Bear.

Head East out of Lucerne Valley for about 13 miles and watch for Bessemer Mine Road (at approximately milepost 31.5). There will be a large BLM Johnson Valley OHV Area sign on the right.

Turn left on Bessemer Mine Road (well graded dirt) and head North for about 3.5 miles to Soggy Dry Lake.

We will camp before the lake, on the left side, hopefully sheltered from the wind by some hills.

If there is not room to camp there, we will be out on the lake bed, on the right side.

Here is a map of the area:

Hey Mark, the guy I bought my buggy from will be going out there to the Jambo Saturday morning but the runs are full. He has a full on comp buggy that used to belong to Skinny on the Pirate Board. He would like to meet up with us and do a run but I wasn't sure how you would feel about that. I haven't told him about our trail because I wanted to ask you first. He could probably spank that waterfall that we tried last time, we could use him for an anchor to winch from! Dancing Let me know if it's okay to invite him. He's a good guy and lives in Fresno so I don't think he would be going there too often anyway.

Vince called me on my cell a few hours ago. After talking it over, I would rather not invite anyone that we do not know.

This is a Spinnin Fours trail and I want to make sure that we get to establish it ourselves before word gets out.

A comp buggy would probably be bored on this trail anyway.

Thanks Vince for asking first.

Wow what a blast that run was Dancing I think it's safe to say that it was much tougher than anticipated. I think everyone had a good time doing the new trail. So have we settled on the name for this trail as "Crowbar"? Think Can't wait for the pics!

I am still tired... sorry for not posting sooner, but I was worn out when I got home at about 4pm yesterday.

The weekend couldn't have turned out better. We established the first leg of the trail, the weather was great (except for some wind in camp), no one broke, the trail was tough but not anything we couldn't handle and as far as I could tell, a good time was had by all!

Yes, we took a vote at the campfire after you left Vince, Crowbar it is!

We had to winch up the waterfall entrance to the canyon. Vince gave it a few good tries, but that is a very tall, very steep, very slick piece of rock!

The name of the trail came after we were wondering if a large protruding knob of rock would take out my A Pillar... Roger was looking at the rock and the crack around it and asks if anyone had a pry bar (crowbar) and I gave him mine. The next thing we knew Roger had rock pried off of the wall and the way was clear!

Vince came up with the "Crowbar" name shortly after Applause

More stories later, for now, here are some preliminary pictures from Steve Bennett. I will get a CD with all the pics from Steve soon.

Thanks Steve for posting these pics for us.

As always I had a great time running with the club. It was a lot of work but a lot of fun. Look forward to wheeling with you guys again soon. Next time you want to break a new trail just let me know. I'll bring my own crow-bar. Mark's is bent. But his A pillar isn't. Angel

Wanted to say how much I enjoyed myself at Crowbar this last weekend. For such a challenging trail (that had apparently never been run by 4-bys) I think everyone did exceptionally well. To run a trail like that with no breakage and no real troubles is unusual in my experience.

Mark posted a link to my photos from this trip. We got some great shots! I am willing to make prints for anyone that sees a shot they like. My new camera allows me to make very nice 8x10 prints and I can deliver the photos at the next meeting. While I don't want to profit from this, it would be nice to cover my expenses; so I was thinking $1.50 for a 8x10, and $.75 for a 5x7. If anyone wants any or all of the photos on CD, I can burn a CD for $2. Email me directly concerning photos or CDs steve@stevebennettdesigns.com

Can't wait to get my Bronco back together and back on the trail! You guys inspired me this weekend to double my efforts and finish this project.

Steve

I was just thinking about our new trail, would you call it a wash? I am wondering if it is now out-of-bounds with that new ruling for the area, this would really suck if it is a closed area. I'm going to read that article again to see.

Here's the link to what I post on our bb, the BLM's website is down. Some of the wording would lead you to believe if the new trail is concidered a wash it is closed. Then some of the wording would indicate that if the area was already designated open it would still be. Since this is an open OHV area it may not be affected.

Huh? What new ruling? It's definitely not a wash - a canyon yes but not a wash. Not much sand there for sure!
