Robbie and I arrived in Mojave a little early, took less time than I figured to get there in the Hummer over a Toyota so we went to Denny's for breakfast. We met up with Lloyd & Phyllis and then Fred around 8:00a, they had their breakfast and then we headed out for the Red Rock Welcome center to get some maps of the area. We then headed to the trailhead, missed it the first time through and had to turn back a few miles. Once we found it we aired down and chatted about the day ahead.
It started out pretty easy but it soon became a very tight and twisting route that quickly claimed a victim, due to my wheelbase on a very sharp turn I had to try jockying my truck through but it seems that sometimes when you shift from drive to reverse it jumps a little bit, just enough to move me into a large boulder. Made a big gouge in the right rear door at the bottom. Oh well if you take it out you should expect damage, but that wasn't the end of it. A short time later as I dropped off a ledge the truck bottomed out on the side and broke the plastic runner. That's right plastic, what were they thinking! I pulled the rest of the clips that hold it in and tossed it into the back.
Robbie found a cliff to climb in as usual scaling it from the inside. He also had the opportunity to hone his offroad skills some since there were sections that were fairly easy, I did have to take over on some of the tougher sections since this isn't very well set up for offroad. It sits a little too low so I took over through those sections. Fred and Lloyd didn't have much trouble at all just a few diff grabbers got them here and there.
We got a little off track but were able to turn back and take a section that had me lifting my front tires off the ground with the awesome travel my suspension has. We had lunch at an old mine site, not much to explore I figure they have hidden and sealed the mine entrance. After lunch we continued up along a decent section that kept you focused on what you were doing. It led to a wedge/v-notch where Fred almost took off his right fender again but we quickly had him back up and take a different line and he pulled right through.
Further up there were a few more technical sections to work past and then out of the canyon and back to the paved road. We aired up and hit the road for home. Even though this was not the toughest of trails it was fun and there are trails that head in different directions so there could be some better challenges that we missed. Well worth the trip, would go again hopefully with a more capable rig next time.
