This Fall the club is traveling to the beautiful and historic San Rafael Swell area in North East Utah! We'll be dry camping for 5 days a few miles off I-70 with lots of camping choices. The area has 100s of miles of easy to moderately easy trails that wind through narrow scenic canyons, pass by multicolored towering buttes, high mesas, and deep gorges. We'll visit the spectacular 'Little Grand Canyon', old mining areas, and a number of ancient indian petroglyphs seldom visited because of their remote locations. Some of us may also want to visit Moab, Utah, (The Arches, Canyonlands, Dead Horse State Park, 4x4 trails, etc.)- only 1-1/2 hours away! Like so many other wonderful off road trails, the San Rafael Swell is threatend with closure, so we want to enjoy the area while we still have access. Additional supplies, food, gas, and water are available at Green River, about 30 minutes East on I-70.

Departure date is currently Saturday, October 1st. The weather should be quite pleasent, but begins to get colder towards the end of the month. We plan to stay the first night at a campground in Las Vegas ($$!) or Mesquite, Nevada, camping 5 days, and depart for home the following Saturday morning.

If interested in joining us come to our next club meeting (Thursday, Sept. 1st, Rick Phillips home), or contact me for further information-Join us for a great trip!

My family vacation plans next week had to be cancelled, so I will be taking 2 full weeks this year to explore and enjoy Utah! I will be at the Swell 10/15/11 to 10/22/11. The week prior to that I want to explore the area south of the Swell, specifically the Henry Mountains. I don't have any exact plans yet.

Sorry that I will miss you guys. I will be giving Fred some suggestions for other areas to explore.

If anyone wants to see my trip report from last year's visit to the Swell, click here. The pictures and maps expand when you click on them and are much better quality than those on Facebook.

I printed the topo maps you posted on our Board-they'll be a great help in locating and running the trails you took us onlast year. Wonder if I could somehow install them on my Garmin GPS? Yes would appreciate any suggestions of other interesting.historic/ scenic trails we could run? I downloaded a free Utah topo a few weeks ago for my GPS-seems to have good detailes of the Swell area.

What model Garmin GPS do you have? I should be able to download the maps and tracks to it, as long as it is compatible with those functions.

I've got two Garmins-an older nuvi 250 I bought a few years ago, and a newer nuvi 2370LT. The free Utah Topo I downloaded doesn't seem to have as good of details and information (i.e. trails, geographical names, etc.) as your Topo-can you give me the name and where I can get a copy of yours?
