Through San Diego: (not suggested unless you want to go to San Diego) Take I-15 south to I-8, go east on I-8 about 100 miles, almost to El Centro. Take the Dunaway Rd exit, go north (left) to S-80 and turn right (east). Go 4.2 miles to Huff Road and turn left (north). The sign at Huff Rd. is somewhat obscured by trees, so watch closely for it. A power line runs along Huff Rd. Follow Huff Rd. 6.2 miles to Wheeler Road (dirt road) and turn left. You are now going west. Follow Wheeler Road about 7 miles, past a couple of forks to the left. You will enter the Superstition Mtn OHV area after about 2 miles. After about five miles the road will turn to the right and you will be heading approximately due north. The main camping/registration area will be on your left.

Through Indio: Take I-10 east, just east of Indio, take 86S expressway south. This newly opened route bypasses the center of Indio and Coachella, much faster and nicer with a tow, and now gives a straight shot all the way to Westmorland. Continue on 86 south to Westmorland. At the stop sign (S. Center), turn right (south). This becomes Forrester Road. Take Forrester Road out of town just past Carter Road to Imler Road. Turn right (west) on Imler Road. Imler will veer south and become Huff Road. There are two dips in the road a mile or so apart. Just over the hill following the second dip is Wheeler Road. Turn right and follow the road next to the hills to camp, about 7 miles.

Here are some scanned maps (from the AAA Imperial County Map) and directions from last year when I planned a trip there

Superstition Mountain OHV Area

Take I-10 to Indio and go south on Hwy 86 toward Truckhaven. Once you are on 86 and past Salton City, you will pass Hwy 78 on the right and the check point on the left. Once you get into Westmorland, watch for Forrester Road (S30) on the right side. Small town, keep your eyes open. Also, this will be the last chance for gas, so you might want to gas up. Turn right on Forrester then start looking for Imler Road on the right side. Turn right on Imler, which eventually turns into Huff Road. You will start to pass some government type fences and buildings as the road curves to the left (South). Start looking for Wheeler Road (Wheel Road on the map) on the right. (If you get to Wheeler Road on the left, you have gone about 1/4 mile too far). Turn right on Wheeler and follow it for about 7 miles (you will enter Superstition OHV area at about 2 miles) past a couple forks to the left...stay right. The road is sometimes a little rough, but is better than Boone Road in Johnson Valley (OK for Motorhomes). We usually camp on the left hand side just before the road curves hard right near the sand and another sign. The GPS coordinates are 32.55.371N 115.48.659W

Just to clarify... For most, if not all, of us, the best and shortest route would be to go like you are going to Truckhaven and then keep going...

It will be longer to take the I-15 to San Diego and then take the I-8 East.
